Summer Study Abroad Program 2015

More than 100 US students participated in ACT's 5 week summer study abroad program this year, and were given the opportunity to enroll in academic courses, visit significant and exceptional sites in Greece and enrich both their academic and social engagement.

ACT’s Summer 2015 Study Abroad program began on the 10th of June, when American students started arriving in Thessaloniki, Greece. Past semester, American College of Thessaloniki hosted three different programs in its unique campus, with students from across the US continent: 22 students arrived for the Hellenic Birthright Program, students that are Greek - Americans and have never been to Greece before; 15 students from the American University in Washington, accompanied by their professor; and last, but not least, 66 students came to Thessaloniki for our ever-growing 4-week Summer Study Abroad program, from almost 30 different colleges in the United States.

The students from all three different programs attended classes and went on many trips and joined various activities. Some of these trips and activities are common for the ACT student body, while others are planned specifically for different programs and our study abroads.

A trip through Myth and History

American students enjoyed their time visiting three major archaeological sites of Greece: the wonderful Temple of Parthenon in Athens gave students the chance to explore the Greek Capital. Their trip continued to the PanHellenic sanctuary of Delphi (in Central Greece) where the famous Oracle of Apollo shared his prophecies, and in Vergina, in northern Greece, where they visited the ancient first capital of the Kingdom of Macedonia and learned more about Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great.

Thessaloniki: In the student hub of Greece

Let’s not forget Thessaloniki, the student hub of Greece. A bustling city full of wonders and surprises, ancient monuments, ruins, interesting museums, quaint little streets, open markets and busy cafes. US Students planned visits to all museums of the city, walks around the walls of the ancient Thessaloniki, tours of the city markets and lots of side activities with their residence assistants, who helped them and guided them throughout the whole program.

 In Halkidiki!

The summer was the perfect opportunity to hit the beach. Students made the short trip to Halkidiki in the beginning of their semester and found themselves in total relaxation, enjoying the sea. Another beach trip to Sani beach resort, where the sophisticated annual Sani Jazz festival takes place, gave them the chance to fall in love with the sound of jazz and join in the festivities during the premiere night.

Quite a full schedule for our study abroads!

Engaging with Greece through Service Learning

Students of Rutgers University who attend the Summer Study Abroad program at ACT had the opportunity to gain hands-on cultural experience and expand their world view through an immersive array of service learning activities. Students were placed at various organizations: At Melissa Girls' Orphanage, students offered creative play activities or assist in fundraising. At "Soma Filon AMEA", an organization providing support and services to physically and mentally disabled individuals, they participated as classroom assistants in creative evening workshops. At YMCA and the War Museum, they created outreach materials such as photographs or short video presentations. An animal sciences major with a special interest in small animals was placed at a veterinary clinic to shadow the vet and assist with the care of stray cats and dogs brought to the clinic. Not only did students provide valuable service to the community but they also got an insider's view of Greek society, including its challenges and triumphs.

And even more…

…meeting with the Greek gods

A trip to the world famous Mt. Olympus took place during the last weekend of the program. A significant number of students signed up in order to participate in one of the most popular trips throughout the semester – students couldn’t wait to visit the glorious “Home of the Greek gods”!

…climbing rocky Meteora

Another trip, this time to Meteora, was planned in July, when more than 90 courageous and adventurous students climbed all the way up to the world-renowned Byzantine monasteries of Meteora, in Central Greece. Meteora is one of the largest and most important complexes of Greek Orthodox monasteries in Greece, second only to Mount Athos, and is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Service Learning: Βringing together theory and community service

After a roller-coaster semester of an experimental class, the students of SOCSCI 399 presented their research on May 27th to the organizations, their instructors and the ACT community. The aim of this pilot course is to enable students to make visible connections between community service, critical reflection on their own learning process, personal and professional development, citizenship skills and values. Key in this context is that students engage in real-life frameworks for research and community service through projects of direct relevance to the partner, mostly non-governmental, organizations.

The participant students engaged actively with a range of research approaches and tools to apply theory on volunteerism, social research and community service – such as interviews, literature reviews, observation and, in some cases, many hours of support and personal creative work. In partnership with their mentors and ongoing mentorship by their tutors, students worked with/for refugee children, Roma children, homeless people, people with drug addictions and volunteers who assist such marginalized groups; organized a charitable fashion event within the ACT campus, or; met with one of the vice-mayors of Thessaloniki to discuss issues concerning the local LGBT community.

In sharing their findings with the participant NGOs and the rest of the ACT community it is hoped that further partnerships and initiatives of this kind will emerge, making service learning a sustainable good practice for learning and contribution to society.

Thanks goes to the following organizations: Arsis (The Arsis Shelter for Unaccompanied Minors; the Mobile School Intervention; The Arsis Library and the Arsis Shelter for Vulnerable and Homeless Individuals), The Center for Democracy and Reconciliation in Southeast Europe, Enjoy Thessaloniki, KETHEA Ithaki and Thessaloniki Allios (Parallaxi).

New Financial Aid Programs for ACT Students

At ACT we strongly believe that we offer an elite education. But education is not just for the elite!
We constantly strive to make education more affordable for all.

Especially for students in Greece who live outside Thessaloniki and will eventually have to move to the city for their studies, as well as for exceptional High School alumni with high grades.

Our new scholarships program aims to support even more prospective students:

Students coming from other cities will automatically receive a financial aid of 30% on their tuition upon application, given that their high school diploma was issued by a Greek High School that is not in the prefecture of Thessaloniki.

Students that hold a High School Diploma from Greece with a graduating grade of 17 and above will automatically receive a financial aid of 50% on their tuition upon application.

Συμπόσιο με θέμα «Service Learning in Thessaloniki: Students & NGOs in dialogue»

American College of Thessaloniki (ACT)

Πρόσφατα, μάλιστα, το American College of Thessaloniki  προχώρησε στη δημιουργία του πιλοτικού μαθήματος Service Learning Practicum.

«Η Σκακιέρα των Οικονομικών Εξελίξεων» Εκδήλωση του Anatolia School of Business του ACT και της HellasFin

Η εκδήλωση οργανώθηκε από το Anatolia School of Business του American College of Thessaloniki (ACT) και την Εταιρία Διαχείρισης Περιουσίας HellasFin, την Τετάρτη 22 Απριλίου 2015 στο ξενοδοχείο “THE MET”, και χαρακτηρίστηκε από τις εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρουσες τοποθετήσεις των κεντρικών ομιλητών και την πολύ μεγάλη προσέλευση του κοινού.

ACT Cinema Club presents: The Punk Syndrome

The Punk Syndrome
by J. Kärkkäinen & J-P. Passai (FI 2012, 55’)

(Finnish with English subtitles)

The Punk Syndrome is a film about Finland’s most kick-ass punk rock band, Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät. The band members, Pertti, Kari, Toni and Sami, are mentally handicapped and they play their music with a lot of attitude and pride.

We follow these professional musicians on their journey from obscurity to popularity. We watch them fight, fall in love and experience strong emotions. We witness long days in the recording studio and on tour. They laugh, cry, drink and fight over who gets to sit in the front on the tour bus. Then it’s time to make up and go talk to people in the audience and tell them how great their band is.

Their songs are about the problems in society as well as about things that they face in their everyday life: how going to the pedicurist sucks and the misery of living in a group home. The guys give piece of their mind to both politicians and people whose attitudes towards people with intellectual disabilities need improvement.

The Punk Syndrome is a film about the essence of punk. It’s a story of handicapped people rebelling against the mainstream. This time you’re allowed to stare and wonder why they act the way they do. And you’ll fall in love with them as you watch how the most kick-ass punk band in Finland conquers the world.
