ACT student peer-reviewed paper accepted for oral presentation at IEEE

New scientific opportunities arise through the research work of Computer Science student Christos Dimitrousis, an undergraduate student at ACT - the American College of Thessaloniki. Mr. Dimitrousis’s work is a contribution to a Biomedical Engineering collaborative project between ACT, a major public university and a prominent public hospital.

Christos joined Dr. Alexander Astaras’s research team (an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at ACT) on his own request and based on his outstanding academic performance. He quickly acclimatized in the research team, picking up the challenge and applying artificial intelligence algorithms to improve the efficiency of the DermaSense scanner. DermaSense is a novel dermatological scanner being developed by the research team and intended to support Dermatologists in diagnosing melanoma cancer earlier and more accurately. This project is a result of the fruitful collaboration of ACT Computer Science with the Laboratory of Medical Physics at the AUTH Medical School and the Dermatology Clinic in Papageorgiou Hospital.  The results of Dimitrousis’s collaborative research are both an exemplar of undergraduate research and can have a positive impact on society.

The academic paper that Dimitrousis co-authored based on the aforementioned research was submitted and accepted to the NEUREL 2018 international conference, sponsored by the IEEE, which took place in Belgrade on November 20-21. Christos Dimitrousis had the opportunity to present the results of this potentially life-saving research himself in Belgrade, representing all three institutions involved in the research team (ACT, AUTH and Papageorgiou Hospital). Their paper will also be published in the conference proceedings and eventually cross-listed in both the IEEE Xplore and Google Scholar online databases.

We congratulate him on his achievement and recognition, feeling more than proud that ACT contributed to his first steps in his professional development.

Επιμορφωτικά σεμινάρια σε θέματα ψυχολογίας παιδιών και εφήβων

By

Πώς θα ωφεληθούν οι γονείς;

ACT Men’s Basketball team in the 4th World Universities International Championships

November 14-18, Barcelona

As students of ACT we had the opportunity to be part of a team, the Basketball team. A unique team that is being reformed every semester with different students all around the world. This semester ACT gave us the chance to participate at the 4th World InterUniversities Championships in Barcelona. Many of the players have been part of a team before, while for others this was their first time competing in a tournament. Regardless of that, for all of us the feeling that surpassed all others was that of excitement. Excitement of being part of this team and mostly of having this chance to represent Greece and ACT. The moment we arrived in Barcelona we were completely ready for our first game on the tournament, after, of course, all our thorough organization during the summer that preceded our trip. Now that the games have been completed, we feel that we had an amazing experience, being a team and experiencing the environment of a tournament. We would like to express our deep gratitude for ACT, which gave us this one of a kind experience. Without ACT we would not have been able to attend and compete at this tournament.

Ioannis Kavazidis

At the tournament there were more than 2000 participants and 80 universities while in the basketball tournament were 32 universities and ACT competed with the following ones: The Paris School of Business (FRA), Universita degli Studi di Roma “Tor Vergata” (ITA) and Vytautas Magnus University (LIT). The team members were: M. Stamoulos (coach), J. Chun, A. Gkikas, I. Kavazidis, D. Kristic, I. Matsinas, C. Muduroglou, A. Ocokoljic, D. Rizos, C. Sandru, D. Terek, B. Whitaker (players) and S. Partemian (Head of delegation).

Pavlos Tsimas at the Dukakis Center: A masterclass in public service

Pavlos Tsimas likes to tell a story about his encounters with former Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis. It was 2008 in Boston, the second time Tsimas was to interview the Duke, as he is known in certain circles. Welcoming Tsimas to his office at Northeastern University, where he has taught for more than two decades, Dukakis asked whether his guest would like some coffee. "Yes, thank you," replied Tsimas, thinking his host would summon a secretary or assistant to fetch the coffee.

It was not to be. Dukakis rose from his desk, went over to the coffee machine, and poured the coffee himself, much to Tsimas' bemusement.

Stories like this one are actually legion among those who have spent any time in the company of Michael Dukakis. Fortunately for the Dukakis Center, Pavlos Tsimas, perhaps the foremost political journalist of his generation, is no less generous or gracious a character, as a marvelously diverse audience in ACT's Bissell Library discovered this past Wednesday night.

DSC 2239 1024 x 683

Tsimas had forsaken celebrating Halloween in Athens to talk American politics in Thessaloniki. It was time well spent.

The occasion was a double anniversary celebration: thirty years since Michael Dukakis' ill-fated run for the American Presidency; and 20 years after Dukakis first visited Thessaloniki to launch what has become the Dukakis Center.

The Bissell Library conference space was decked out for the occasion as a veritable television studio. Camera crews from LiveMedia and AddArt were present, while translators Michael and Klio Webber (the former an ACT alumnus) manned the translation booth set up in the back of the room.

The evening was divided, appropriately, into two halves, the one dedicated to Pavlos Tsimas' analysis of the Dukakis phenomenon, the second to the exploits of one of two academic Centers which bears the Dukakis name (the other being based in Boston). Meanwhile, surprise guest Giorgos Giannakoulas, a senior at Anatolia College currently interning at the Dukakis Center, shared his thoughts about what Michael Dukakis might mean to young Hellenes today.

The capacity audience was also treated to an excerpt from the forthcoming documentary on the Dukakis Center, "Now More Than Ever," produced by the Thessaloniki-based non-profit AddArt.

The evening evolved gradually into a bilingual masterclass in public service. Protagonists Tsimas and David Wisner, Executive Director of the Dukakis Center, interviewed one another in turns in Greek and in English on such topics as the relative electability of a Michael Dukakis, politics and education, and, ultimately, the meaning of public service.

DSC 2237 1024 x 683

The highlight of the evening came when both protagonists -- Tsimas and Wisner -- concurred that the essence of public service is to be found in Pericle's Funeral Oration, as recounted by Thucydides. Michael Dukakis himself contributed to the exchange, in the form of a pre-taped interview, in which he repeated his mantra that there is nothing more satisfying in life than being of service to one's fellow citizens.

In the end, however, the last word(s) belonged to the audience.

"In Athens there is Eliamep; in Thessaloniki there is the Dukakis Center."

"Mr Tsimas, you are even better live than on television."

Digitizing Creativity: The art and science of digital marketing

In a crowded hall, on October 8th, the launch event of ACT’s Lifelong Learning Center (LLC), Digitizing Creativity: The art and science of digital marketing, brought together distinguished professionals from the US and Greece who shared their experience and insights on digital marketing developments. The purpose of the conference was to chart any changes in the creative process in the digital era and showcase how to develop ‘big ideas with small budgets.’

In his opening remarks, Dr. Panos Vlachos, the President of Anatolia College, highlighted the Life Long Learning Center’s goal to monitor developments and become the hub for knowledge acquisition and skills upgrading. Aligned with Anatolia’s mission and ACT’s central message Embrace change, LLC intends to become the point of reference for those who wish to advance professionally, or seek an opportunity for self-improvement, noted Dr. Sevasti Kessapidou, ACT’s Associate Dean of Academic Affairs who also serves as the Lifelong Learning Center’s Director.

In their keynote address, echoing the conference’s main message, Fred Senn, founding partner of Fallon, and Rocky Novak, Fallon’s Managing Director, spoke of ‘big ideas and small budgets’ and encouraged the audience ‘to outthink rather than outspend the competition.’ In doing so, the keynote speakers highlighted the need for marketers to build strong relationships. ‘We should treat brands the same way we treat people’, they argued, and gave a three-pronged advice: find an idea, find your humanity and let technology do the rest. Fallon, as Fred Senn announced, is endorsing the upcoming Digital Marketing Certificate that will be offered by ACT’s Lifelong Learning Center.

digitizing creativity 02

George Levitikos, Chief Integration Officer of MullenLowe Athens, emphasized the need to be agile, ‘to adapt or die,’ as he distinctively noted. Creative ideas should come from integrated teams and be applicable to various channels of communication. Mr. Levitikos also noted that the new talents need to multitask and use their collective creativity not only to ‘unstereotype’ but also to help stop ‘thumb scrolling’ which the digital media allow.

Μarianna Lappou, Account Director of DDB, TRIBAL WORLDWIDE ATHENS, presented the role of brands as publishers and addressed the transition from interruption marketing to permission marketing. Emphasizing that ‘content is the king,’ Ms. Lappou argued that marketers need not only to attract the attention but also to maintain it, particularly in the noisy environment that the multiple stimuli create.

Finally, Petros Lytrivis, Digital Director of BGM OMD Greece, prompted marketers to maximize the value of the promotional message, stressing the need for more personalized messages that eloquently capture experiences rather than mass messages. Mr. Lytrivis highlighted the need for precision marketing and presented the new trend in digital communication, programmatic marketing.

Meet Valentini, the International Relations Alumna

The sky is not the limit... The deep space maybe

Valentini Aristotelous graduated from ACT in 2003 and she is working as permanent staff to the European Space Agency (ESA) in the ESTEC (European Space Research and Technical Centre) establishment located in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. For the last ten years, she has been working in the GALILEO Project (Europe’s satellite navigation system) as management and administrative assistant of two teams, Space Segment, and Navigation Security Office. Space Segment is responsible for the satellite procurement and launching, and the Navigation Security Office is responsible for the physical and personal security and for information protection of the project.

You are currently working in the European Space Agency, which seems quite fascinating. Tell us a little bit about your job there, and how would you describe the Agency as a working environment for young people?

My day-to-day activities vary, but some of my main responsibilities are mission, meeting and event organization as well as attendance, IT system management tools, such as Sharepoint, and managing the launch deployment plan with active participation during the launch campaign. The working environment is indeed fascinating. Not only because of the establishment itself (yes, there are sports facilities, including a swimming pool, sauna, and a golf course!) but because of the multicultural and space-related Agency’s roots and its culture of shared values and principles amongst colleagues. ESA offers several programmes for young students as well as several recruitment opportunities.

Did your studies at ACT prepare you for the career you are pursuing? Have you thought about your next steps?

Apart from developing my skills in the English language, through the ACT courses, I advanced my critical and analytical thinking skills such as using the SWOT technique and lesson-learned cases. Further, I learned how to become resourceful and problem-solving oriented. However, the most important lesson I learned at ACT was never to give up on my educational, and later, on my professional goals.

Accepting failure and learning from it is as important as enjoying any success. Step back, reassess and move on are key skills that serve you well in all areas of your life. My aspiration is to grow vertically on my current position, by increasing responsibility.

Do not take anything for granted because everyone is replaceable. Always give your best performance, regardless of the situation. Be satisfied if the outcome is positive, and learn and improve if it is not so positive. – Valentini Aristotelous

Why did you choose to study International Relations?

The actual name of the bachelor degree I received is “History and International Relations (Major) with a concentration on Foreign Affairs and International Relations and in International Business (Minor). History, diplomacy, political theory and current politics fascinated me since I was a child. I felt that I had to raise this interest to academic level.

How would you evaluate your overall experience at ACT?

I come from a family of three children; my other two siblings were receiving already higher education as per United States educational standards. Therefore, it was more due to an influence from my parents who encouraged me to follow academic studies with an American degree. This gave me the opportunity to spend my college years in an amazing campus with classmates with whom I kept friendship until now. Moreover, I will never forget the instructors who inspired me to expand my educational venture.

What would you advice a young girl who is thinking of studying International Relations?

Achieving a degree in International Relations offers unlimited opportunities for further studies and work prospects. Those of a graduate with an IR degree range from politics and law to economics and management. My personal advice in conjunction with IR studies is to be fluent in as many languages as possible (at least three or four European languages) and receive personal and professional experience through internships and voluntary work (paid/unpaid) during undergraduate and graduate studies. We live in a world on which companies require multilingual and skilled employees with working experience in a multicultural environment. The working experience provided by internships and voluntary work gives a priceless added value in order to open the first professional door.

Is the sky really the limit?

For an idiomatic expression, I strongly agree. However, if taken literally, I would say the limit is much higher: “Deep space would set your limits much beyond the sky”.

I encourage young students and graduates to keep on chasing their dreams and always think positive. Acquiring a positive mind-set, being a hard worker and finding the balance between study/working and personal life increases the probability of success, feeling complete and happy. Do not take anything for granted because everyone is replaceable. Give always your best performance regardless of the situation. Be satisfied if the outcome is positive, and learn, and improve if it is not so positive.

Lecture for the Holocaust to students from Evosmos

On the 23rd of February, 2018, ACT welcomed the students of the 2nd Junior High School of Evosmos to a journey to the past. As a part of the “Nazism and crimes in Greece” program, the students had the opportunity to attend a lecture “On the position and struggles of women in a fascist and Nazi environment” delivered by Dr. Maria Kyriakidou, professor of History and Head of Humanities and Social Studies, ACT. The lecture, along with material from the Second World War from Italy and Germany, highlighted the crimes against humanity and more specifically, the conditions of women during the Holocaust in the Concentration Camps and in Greece, during the German occupation.

The lecture concluded with an emotional screening of the documentary on the Greek Resistance during the German occupation, “The Birds of the Swamp”. After the lecture, the students were kindly welcomed to explore the facilities of the ACT, the library, and the classrooms. The visit was completed with an experiential seminar on Vocational Guidance, presented by Dimitris Diamantis, Business Liaison, Career Services & Alumni Relations Officer of ACT. By the end of this visit, the high school students acquired precious historical knowledge and developed a more clear idea on their interests.
