The "Study in Thessaloniki" initiative was presented on Monday, October 9, in the Municipal Council Hall of Athens, by the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Yiannis Boutaris and Deputy Mayor for Tourist Development and International Relations, Spiros Pegas, alongside representatives of ACT and other major educational institutions in Thessaloniki.

The goal of this initiative is to attract new students to Thessaloniki, from the rest of Greece and other countries.

Thessaloniki, often described as the "student hub of Greece", is home to more than 100,000 university students, meaning that more than 1 out of every 10 residents is a student.

Entrepreneurship requires a host of skills, including creativity, problem-solving, imagination and passion, so where better to start than in elementary school? For the second year in a row, Anatolia’s 5th and 6th graders completed the five-day “Young Business Creators” workshop organized at ACT. Developed by the University of Iowa’s Jacobsen Institute for Youth Entrepreneurship, the program takes students through all the stages of turning an idea into a business, and includes hands-on exercises and visits to innovative companies. This year, the YBC workshop was rolled out to our High School students as well, as a Young Entrepreneurs Camp, with a specific focus on innovation, viability, and implementation - all necessary elements for beginning a business in the real world.

On September 13, 2017, the Dukakis Center and the US Consulate General of Thessaloniki co-sponsored the keynote event in this year’s Reworks Agora event, a Dukakis Lecture by Elizabeth Barry on "Reports from the Frontiers of Democracy: Implications for Urban Design. "

In her capacity as co-founder of Public Lab (publiclab.org) and co-founder of TreeKIT (treekit.org), Liz Barry develops geographic tools and civic science methods for collaborative cities. Her background is in urban landscape design, and she teaches at Columbia University, Parsons the New School for Design, and Pratt Institute. Previously, she worked at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill planning international new cities and campuses, at Durham Inner-city Gardeners (DIG) coordinating youth urban horticulture enterprise, and has travelled around the country catalyzing interaction among strangers with a "Talk To Me" sign - a project that received international press including the New York Times, the Associated Press, CNN, Oprah, and NPR's This American Life.

Ms. Barry's Thessaloniki lecture took place at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall and was part of the 17th annual Reworks contemporary music festival.

Reworks Agora is a cross-thematic forum of the Reworks festival, aiming for a forward-thinking approach to the future vision for creativity, presenting emerging topics, initiatives and artists that inspire the dialogue on the development of culture, entrepreneurship and technology. Agora sessions showcase the most innovative developments in music industry, digital culture, creative economy and art, contributing to their growth in Greece. Two other sessions featured a discussion on contemporary music by organizers of leading European music festivals, and a forum on the phenomenon of fake news by leading journalists and students of social media, among whom Pavlos Tsimas, Elena Papadimitriou, Eliza Vozenberg, and two young scholar-activists.

During the last two years, the ACT students had the opportunity to discover their creativity in painting. The Painting Club began in 20015 with Nayia Kaplanidou, an accomplished icon painter and Anatolia College alumna (‘80). At the beginning of each course the ACT students were taught the traditional academic painting process and as the lessons were evolving they discovered their personal way of expression.

The outstanding ACT campus has often been a source of inspiration when the class was taking place in the nature. The students not only developed their artistic skills by using a variety of techniques and materials. Most of all they experienced the fact that Art enchances the quality and essence of our lives and offers a silent but powerful way of expressing ourselves and our beliefs.

In the end of each semester the students set up an exhibition with their paintings at the ACT locations.

During my Senior year at ACT I decided to attend the painting club. Although the last year in college is particularly demanding I feel glad that I joined the course because instead of taking my time or energy it offered me the opportunity to clear my mind and relax after a busy day. I always loved painting but the experience with Ms. Nayia is something more than just learning how to paint, it is a whole different atmosphere and ambiance that gives to one peace of mind and great inspiration to get creative!

I joined the Painting Club from the very first semester at ACT and I can say that it has made my two years of studies here more enjoyable. The art room is my two hours escape into creativity, peace and deep talk with the art professor which adds so much love and dedication to the club transforming it into a real art therapy. Another aspect I like about the club is the fact that the art room is equipped with everything one needs and it's easily accessible at anytime. It makes you feel free to be more creative. It is definitely one of my favorite spots on campus and I would suggest it to everyone regardless of their level of skills in painting.

I loved being a part of the art club at ACT. I was only there for a semester but it meant something to me that I was able to still make art while taking classes as well. It allowed me to meet new friends outside of my abroad program as well as have a place to relax and express myself during the week. I very much enjoyed the freedom to learn new things from Nayia and the other students as it was an open place for new ideas. I still think about my time there as well as the connections made through this class and hope others take advantage of this opportunity.

She did not want us to follow strict painting rules because she believed in everyone’s personal freedom of expression. With her warmness and tranquility, Mrs Nayia helped me unfold my inner feelings and thoughts into narratives made out of colors, drawings and narratives. The relaxing music that accompanied us while we were painting, the trips in the nature, all these elements rendered the painting club a meditative, pleasant and unforgettable experience.

Αίτηση Συμμετοχής

Ο διαγωνισμός θα λάβει φέτος χώρα στη Bissell Library του ACT στη Θεσσαλονίκη την παρακάτω ημερομηνία:

• Υποψήφιοι για προπτυχιακές και μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές: Παρασκευή 1 Σεπτεμβρίου 2023, 18:00

Όλοι οι υποψήφιοι θα λάβουν μέρος σε μία γραπτή εξέταση γνώσεων και ικανοτήτων, πολλαπλής επιλογής, η οποία θα διαρκέσει περίπου 1 ώρα. Περισσοτέρες λεπτομέρειες θα δοθούν επίσης στους υποψήφιους και μέσω email μετά τη δήλωση συμμετοχής.

Η εξέταση θα είναι στα ελληνικά και δεν χρειάζεται κάποιου είδους προετοιμασία.

(Προσοχή: Τα δείγματα αυτά δεν ανταποκρίνονται στο βαθμό δυσκολίας του διαγωνισμού αλλά αφορούν στην όλη "φιλοσοφία" του τεστ.)

Δηλώσεις συμμετοχής θα γίνονται δεκτές έως Πέμπτη 31 Αυγούστου 2023 και ώρα 17:00.

Η συμμετοχή στον διαγωνισμό είναι δωρεάν.

Όροι Συμμετοχής

• Η συμμετοχή στο διαγωνισμό υποτροφιών ακυρώνει προηγούμενη προσφορά υποτροφίας από το ACT.
• Οι υποψήφιοι που επιθυμούν να συμμετάσχουν στις εξετάσεις για προπτυχιακές σπουδές θα πρέπει να είναι έως 24 ετών.
• Οι υποψήφιοι για προπτυχιακές σπουδές θα πρέπει να κατέχουν απολυτήριο Ελληνικού Λυκείου.
• Οι υποψήφιοι θα πρέπει να είναι κάτοχοι πτυχίου πιστοποιητικού γλωσσομάθειας στην αγγλική γλώσσα σε επίπεδο Β2.. Εξαιρούνται όσοι έχουν απολυτήριο από αγγλόφωνα σχολεία (π.χ. ACS, Ανατόλια, Pinewood, Pierce, κτλ.).
• Δεν έχουν δικαίωμα συμμετοχής στις υποτροφίες προπτυχιακών προγραμμάτων όσοι φοιτητές είναι ήδη εγγεγραμμένοι στο ACT.
• Δεν έχουν δικαίωμα συμμετοχής στις υποτροφίες προπτυχιακών/μεταπτυχιακών προγραμμάτων όσοι φοιτητές έχουν αποδεχτεί υποτροφία στο παρελθόν.
• Οι υποψήφιοι για τα μεταπτυχιακά προγράμματα θα πρέπει να κατέχουν πτυχίο από Κολλέγιο/Πανεπιστήμιο (ΑΕΙ/ΤΕΙ) - τετραετούς φοίτησης.
• Δεν έχουν δικαίωμα συμμετοχής στην εξέταση όσοι υποψήφιοι έλαβαν μέρος τις προηγούμενες τρεις χρονιές (2020 - 2022).
• Οι υποτροφίες αφορούν μόνο στη φοίτηση στο campus του ΑCT. Σε περίπτωση που κάποιος ή κάποια επιλέξει ένα intercollegiate program που συνδυάζει φοίτηση στο ACT με ολοκλήρωση των σπουδών σε κάποιο άλλο εκπαιδευτικό ίδρυμα του εξωτερικού (πχ Kogod School of Business, Washington, DC), το ACT καλύπτει μόνο το κομμάτι που αφορά στα δίδακτρα της Ελλάδας.
• Οι υποτροφίες ισχύουν για εγγραφή μόνο για το ακαδημαϊκό έτος 2023-2024 και ισχύουν μέχρι την ολοκλήρωση των σπουδών με την προϋπόθεση ότι οι σπουδαστές θα διατηρήσουν τη βαθμολογία που θα τους ζητηθεί.
• Ο σπουδαστής υποχρεούται να φοιτήσει τουλάχιστον μέχρι και τη δεύτερη περίοδο (10 Ιανουαρίου - 3 Απριλίου 2024). Στην περίπτωση που αποφασίσει να αποχωρήσει μέσα στην δεύτερη περίοδο υποχρεούται να καταβάλει το συνολικό ποσό των διδάκτρων της περιόδου.
• Οι πλήρεις υποτροφίες για πτυχιακές σπουδές ισχύουν μόνο για πλήρη παρακολούθηση μαθημάτων (full time).

It was an emotional, joyful and windy evening for ACT’s graduating undergraduate and graduate students celebrating the successful completion of their studies. During the 2017 Commencement ceremony which took place at ACT’s open amphitheater, certificates and diplomas were awarded to all graduates, as well as awards to students who excelled in academia, but also extracurricular activities offered by the non-profit educational organization. The valedictorian speeches were delivered by Konstantinos Theodoridis and Vasiliki Kalaitzidou. The commencement speech this year was given by Stathis N. Kalyvas, Professor of Political Science at Yale University. In his inspiring speech, Mr. Kalyvas advised the graduating students to

be risk-taking, not risk-averse; counter-cyclical, not conformist; do not be afraid of failure; to keep learning.  You are in the unique position of shaping not just your own future but the future of our society as well. So, go ahead and do it!

Please note that the following information concerns Parallel to Greek university studies and is addressed exclusively to students already studying at Greek public universities. This program allows students at Greek public universities to follow another program at ACT.

Είσαι στο Πολυτεχνείο, για παράδειγμα, και στοχεύεις στο να διαχειρίζεσαι τη δική σου εταιρεία μηχανικών - ένα παράλληλο πτυχίο Bachelor’s in Business θα βοηθούσε πολύ τα μελλοντικά σου σχέδια. Ή ένα στοχευμένο Certificate Program που επικεντρώνεται σε κάποια συγκεκριμένη δεξιότητα.
