Φέτος για 5η συνεχή χρονιά θα πραγματοποιηθεί το Καλοκαιρινό Μουσικό Πρόγραμμα στο ACT - American College of Thessaloniki/ Summer Music Performance Program at ACT που διοργανώνεται σε συνεργασία με το Georgia State University των ΗΠΑ και τη Μουσική Εταιρία Μακεδονίας και έχει τεθεί υπό την αιγίδα της Περιφέρειας Κεντρικής Μακεδονίας. Το πρόγραμμα περιλαμβάνει ανοιχτά μαθήματα (master classes) φωνητικής/όπερας/μονωδίας, φλάουτου, βιολιού, βιολοντσέλου, πιάνου, μουσικής σύνθεσης, μουσικής δωματίου καθώς και διαλέξεις πάνω σε ειδικά μουσικολογικά θέματα όπως: μουσική παιδαγωγία, μέθοδοι χαλάρωσης, ορθοσωματική κ.α. 

Το πρόγραμμα είναι ανοιχτό για σπουδαστές όλων των ηλικιών και όλων των επιπέδων, οι οποίοι θα έχουν την ευκαιρία να έρθουν σε επαφή με καλλιτέχνες και προσωπικότητες διεθνούς κύρους και να αποκτήσουν πολύτιμες εμπειρίες και γνώσεις εμπλουτίζοντας την έκφραση και την ποιοτική δημιουργία. Στη διάρκεια του δεκαημέρου οι σπουδαστές θα κάνουν ατομικά μαθήματα με τους καθηγητές, θα μπορούν να παρακολουθήσουν όλα τα ανοιχτά μαθήματα (master classes), τις διαλέξεις, τις συναυλίες των καθηγητών και συμμετέχουν σε συναυλίες. 

Το πρόγραμμα που ξεκίνησε το 2015 με μεγάλη επιτυχία, έχει αποκτήσει διεθνή αναγνώριση και προσελκύει σπουδαστές από όλο τον κόσμο (Αυστραλία, Αρμενία, Βέλγιο, Γαλλία, Γκάνα, Ελλάδα, Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες, Καναδά, Κύπρο, Λιθουανία, Μπαχάμες). 

Τη διεύθυνση διοργάνωσης έχει ο Χρίστος Γαλιλαίας, την καλλιτεχνική διεύθυνση η Νεβάρτ-Βερόν Γαλιλαία και τον συντονισμό του προγράμματος ο Δρ Γρηγόρης Μπακλαβάς, αναπληρωτής Κοσμήτορας Διοικητικών Υποθέσεων του ACT.

Family businesses operate essentially in every field globally. It is the most common form of business worldwide. The management succession in family businesses was the topic of the event held at the fully packed Bissell Library of the American College of Thessaloniki on Tuesday, April 9th.

The event was organized by the ENTREPRENEURSHIP HUB OF ACT – A DIVISION OF ANATOLIA, the SECTOR OF WOMEN MANAGERS AND ENTREPRENEURS (TOGME) and the HELLENIC INSTITUTE FOR MARKETING (EIM) of the HELLENIC MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION.

Dr. Christos Georgiou, Director of Documentation and Research of the Association of Industries of Northern Greece was the main speaker of the event. He referred to the composition of ownership, management and family which creates a complexity that requires specific knowledge and skills to be successfully understood and lead to effective management. He stressed that when entrepreneurs neglect the management succession issues, then succession can become a very sad story causing pain in the business as well as in the family.

Under the co-ordination of Mrs Silia Christofilopou, Partner, HRAdvisor – HRPartners some well-known businesspeople like Mr. Kostantinos Papadopoulos Chatzakos, Deputy Chief Officer at MEVGAL ,  Ms. Maria Choutou, CEO, CHOUTOS Catering SA and Ms. Maria Spanou, President and CEO, SPANOS S.A., and Mr. Dimitrios Samaras, Presiden and CEO, SAMARAS & ASSOCIATES SA, shared their knowledge and professional experience about the subject.

On the second part of the event Mrs. Katerina Polyzoi, Director, KPMG Consultants, referred to the strategic combination between family and business life cycles. A panel was formulated among businesspeople who constitute 1 st  and 2 nd  generation within their companies. Ms. Stella Doca, DOCA SA, Mr. Manos Vosmandros, Marketing Director SMILE Cosmetics SA, Mr. Dimitrios Adamidis, ADAMIDIS SA, Mr. Savvas Tsironis, ANEMI SA and Mr. Thanou Tsironi, President ANEMI SA shared their experience on that matter with the moderation of Ms. Virginia Dimaresi, journalist FOCUS FM and ATLAS TV.

The 6th of March, international anti-bullying day, is a day that calls to action; an action that unites. Our community and our society at large must not tolerate marginalization. We must act against bullying in all of its manifestations.

ACT - The American College of Thessaloniki, standing by its mission to cultivate individual and civic responsibility as well as respect towards others, organized on that day an event aiming to do exactly that: to awaken understanding and empathy. The Anti-bullying Fashion Show, organized by students of the undergraduate and graduate programs was ACT's innovative and original way to raise awareness. Joining forces with the 2nd gymnasium of Giannitsa and other anti-bullying parties, supported by volunteers and ACT alumni who offered from clothing to make up services to music, the wonderful models, both young men, and women, delivered a strong and passionate message. The invited speaker Father Christos Mitsios summed it up beautifully: "We need to do some soul searching. We need to reconnect with our civilization, our humanity. How did we get to torture other human beings? Each is entitled to their difference."

The photograph where all models hold hands on the runway at the end says exactly that: united we are doing something about it.

The Greek Lacrosse Association (GLA), in conjunction with ACT (The American College of Thessaloniki) announces their participation in the 4th Annual International Sports Exhibition “Sportexpo 2019”.  The GLA’s booth, located in Pavilion 10, will feature introduction videos to the sport and have pamphlets and flyers for future learning opportunities.

“Sportexpo 2019” is organized by TIF-Helexpo and the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports at the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair from April 10th to 13th (Wed. Thurs. Fri. 09:00-20:00, Sat. 10:00-20:00). The exhibition focuses on athletics, with a general moto “Athletics for everyone” and is a specialized and unique event in Northern Greece. The main objectives of the Exhibition are to familiarize the public with all sports, to strengthen the athletic spirit through creating athletic consciousness.

This years exhibition is of particular significance, as the joint bid between Greece, Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria for the 2030 World Cup will be announced.

On Friday March 22 nd , Dr. Aimiliza Stefanidou, Coordinator of the BSc Psychology program accompanied 16 ACT psychology students on a field visit to KETHEA-Ithaki at Sindos. KETHEA, the largest rehabilitation network in Greece, helps people suffering from various forms of addiction (e.g. psychotropic substances, gambling, Internet) to remain abstinent and successfully reintegrate into society. KETHEA also runs school and community-based prevention and early intervention programs, and is active in training and research in the field of addiction. Its therapeutic programs and activities seek to raise awareness of the phenomenon, to promote scientific knowledge, and to continually improve the services offered to addicts and their families.

The goal of this visit was to explore volunteering and experiential learning opportunities along with career options at the substance abuse area as a follow-up to the Career Day where the invited speaker Ms. Dora Zisopoulou, psychologist at KETHEA, provided ACT students with valuable information on addiction, treatment and recovery with reference to the particular therapeutic center.

Mr. Vasilis Kalabalikis, psychologist/Head of KETHEA-Ithaki, Mr. Christos Matziounis, Director of Education Training, interns and a recovering member of the community welcomed the ACT students. After a short presentation of the center activities, a great interactive discussion was led by the welcoming team highlighting the complex nature of addiction and the psychology behind it.

It was an intense learning experience which provided students with a basic substance abuse education and the opportunity to reflect on choosing an internship and/or a future career in addiction counseling.

Η εκπαιδευτική ρομποτική αποτελεί το καταλληλότερο μέσο για να κατανοήσουν οι μαθητές επιστήμες όπως τη Μηχανική, τη Φυσική, τα Μαθηματικά και την Πληροφορική και να αναγνωρίσουν το ρόλο αυτών στις τεχνολογίες του άμεσου μέλλοντος. Παράλληλα, συμβάλει στην ανάπτυξη δεξιοτήτων όπως η ανάλυση και επίλυση προβλημάτων, η συνεργατικότητα και η δημιουργική και κριτική σκέψη.

Για να διδάξει κανείς, όμως, την εκπαιδευτική ρομποτική απαιτείται γνώση και κατάρτιση.

Σε ποιους απευθύνονται

Τα παρακάτω προγράμματα απευθύνονται σε εκπαιδευτικούς πρωτοβάθμιας και δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης αντίστοιχα ή/και σε γονείς οι οποίοι γνωρίζουν και θέλουν να ενταχθούν εισαχθούν στην εκπαιδευτική ρομποτική ως μέντορες για να μπορέσουν να υποστηρίξουν τα παιδιά τους στο ίδιο εγχείρημα.

Εισαγωγή στην Εκπαιδευτική Ρομποτική 

Η πλατφόρμα LEGO Education MINDSTORMS EV3 αποτελεί την κορυφαία λύση εκπαιδευτικής ρομποτικής, αφού έχει επιλεχθεί και από τον οργανισμό WRO ως κύριο μέσο για την συμμετοχή στην παγκόσμια ολυμπιάδα ρομποτικής. Στο συγκεκριμένο πρόγραμμα με τη χρήση του LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Software, θα μάθουμε τον τρόπο με τον οποίο κινείται και στρίβει το ρομπότ, πως χρησιμοποιούμε τους αισθητήρες, τη χρήση μεταβλητών (variables), της επανάληψης (loop) και της επιλογής (switch), αποστολή δεδομένων (Data Wires), πως φτιάχνουμε δικά μας blocks, βαθμονόμηση αισθητήρων (calibration), μαθηματικά και λογικά blocks, βασική ακολουθία γραμμής.

Εκπαιδευτική Ρομποτική για Προχωρημένους

Το συγκεκριμένο εκπαιδευτικό πρόγραμμα προϋποθέτει ότι είστε εξοικειωμένοι με την χρήση όλων των block του LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Software και είναι η συνέχεια του προηγούμενου προγράμματος. Σε αυτό το πρόγραμμα θα μάθουμε να χρησιμοποιούμε παράλληλη μετάδοση (parallel beams), πίνακες (arrays) και αρχεία (files), να φτιάχνουμε πιο εξελιγμένες ακολουθίες γραμμής και στροφές.

Εισαγωγή στην Ανάπτυξη Έργων με τη Χρήση EV3 και τη Συμβατότητα με Arduino & Raspberry

Η πλατφόρμα LEGO Education MINDSTORMS EV3 αποτελεί την κορυφαία λύση εκπαιδευτικής ρομποτικής, αφού έχει επιλεχθεί και από τον οργανισμό WRO ως κύριο μέσο για τη συμμετοχή στην παγκόσμια ολυμπιάδα ρομποτικής. Στο συγκεκριμένο εκπαιδευτικό πρόγραμμα θα εξερευνήσουμε το πως μπορούμε να προσθέσουμε και να επεκτείνουμε τις λειτουργίες της συνδυάζοντας το με open source μικροελεγκτές και μικροϋπολογιστές, όπως τα Arduino & Raspberry Pi.
Παράλληλα, θα γίνει εισαγωγή και ανάλυση των διαθέσιμων προγραμματιστικών μέσων και των ιδανικών ροών εργασίας (workflows), δίνοντας ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στην γλώσσα προγραμματισμού Python.

Ανάπτυξη Έργων με τη Χρήση Μικροελεγκτών & Μικροϋπολογιστών για Προχωρημένους

Εκμεταλλευόμενοι τα πλεονεκτήματα τεχνολογιών μικροελεγκτών και μικροϋπολογιστών και των δυνατοτήτων που αυτές μας προσφέρουν, οδηγούμαστε βήμα-βήμα στην ανάπτυξη "έξυπνων" έργων, καλύπτοντας ένα ευρύ φάσμα επιστημών και γνωστικών αντικειμένων.
Αισθητήρες, ενεργοποιητές, ασύρματες και ενσύρματες επικοινωνίες, αρχιτεκτονικές ΙΟΤ και άλλα, συνθέτουν υψηλού επιπέδου έργα, που σε συνδυασμό με γλώσσες προγραμματισμού, όπως οι Python & C, οδηγούν τους μαθητές σε μια υψηλού επιπέδου γνώση και αντίληψη των σύγχρονων τεχνολογιών.

Εισαγωγή στην Εκπαιδευτική Ρομποτική Δημοτικού

Παρακολουθώντας το σεμινάριο εισαγωγής στην εκπαιδευτική ρομποτική δημοτικού, οι εκπαιδευόμενοι θα γνωρίσουν τη φυσική και τα μαθηματικά που κρύβονται πίσω από την κατασκευή ενός ρομποτικού μοντέλου, τις διάφορες μεθόδους μετάδοσης κίνησης, αλλά και τις βασικές εντολές προγραμματισμού στο περιβάλλον του MIT Scratch 2.0. Με τη χρήση του LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 θα έχουν όλοι οι συμμετέχοντες την ευκαιρία να κατασκευάσουν και να προγραμματίσουν ρομποτικά μοντέλα και να βιώσουν μια διαδραστική εμπειρία πάνω στις σύγχρονες εκπαιδευτικές μεθόδους.
Ολοκληρώνοντας το πρόγραμμα θα έχετε μάθει να συνδέεται το LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 με το ΜΙΤ Scratch 2.0 και να είστε σε θέση να εξερευνήσετε μαζί με τους μαθητές ή/και τα παιδιά σας τους ατελείωτους συνδυασμούς και δυνατότητες που σας δίνει ο συνδυασμός τους για υλοποίηση project για το μάθημα σας ή για συμμετοχή σε διαγωνισμούς.
Το πρόγραμμα απευθύνεται σε εκπαιδευτικούς πρωτοβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης ή/και σε γονείς οι οποίοι ενδιαφέρονται να εισαχθούν στην εκπαιδευτική ρομποτική για να μπορέσουν να υποστηρίξουν τα παιδιά τους στο ίδιο εγχείρημα.

Εκπαιδευτική Ρομποτική Δημοτικού για Προχωρημένους

Το συγκεκριμένο εκπαιδευτικό πρόγραμμα προϋποθέτει ότι είστε εξοικειωμένοι με την χρήση του LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 και τον βασικό προγραμματισμό του με το MIT Scratch 2.0 και είναι η συνέχεια του προηγούμενου προγράμματος . Σε αυτό πρόγραμμα θα εμβαθύνουμε στην αναπαράσταση του κώδικα με τη χρήση του Κωδικοράματος και προγραμματιστικές τεχνικές που μπορούν να χρησιμοποιήσουν οι μαθητές για να αυξήσουμε την πολυπλοκότητα των project μας.

Μετά την ολοκλήρωση του προγράμματος, οι συμμετέχοντες θα λάβουν ένα πιστοποιητικό παρακολούθησης από το ACT.

ACT Business School and Finance Club of University of Macedonia (UoM) launched their collaboration in the joint event "Behavioral Finance". The well attended event took place on Tuesday February 19 th in Thessaloniki Stock Exchange Center, where the speakers addressed an important key factor in the return of investment: the behavior of the investors.

The audience was welcomed by Dr. Stamos Karamouzis, ACT Provost, and Mr. Radamanthis Tsotsos of the Athens Exchange Group.

Dr. Nikolas Hourvouliades, Chair at ACT School of Business, presented the dramatic moments of September 2008 with the bankruptcy and, finally, the collapse of Lehman Brothers Company which triggered the largest decline in US stock market since 2001 and a financial crisis with side effects in the world wide economy.

Dr. Yiannis Krassas, Professor at ACT School of Business, specialized in Behavior Financial, analyzed the reasons that lead investors sometimes make unreasonable and excessive risk-taking decisions that end to negative financial results.

Mr. Asteris Tsoukalas, Head of the Regional Department Office of the Hellenic Capital Market Commission, presented the functions and responsibilities of the Capital Market Committees, both in national and international level. He shared, also, with the audience, real cases of frauds and deception of the investors stretching the responsibilities that investors should undertake in order to avoid unlawful transactions.

On Sunday, March 17 2019 the Intercollegiate Democratic Convention titled ‘European Parliament Elections 2019: Why care?’ was organized by the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences at ACT (the American College of Thessaloniki), with the support of ACT’s Michael and Kitty  Dukakis Center for Public and Humanitarian Service and the European Parliament - Office in Greece. The event took place at the Mediterranean Palace Hotel, Thessaloniki from 9:30-16:00. This was the 2 nd annual Intercollegiate Democratic Convention organized by ACT after last year’s one on Democracy in the EU. The event was convened by Dr. Maria Kyriakidou, Professor and Chair at the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences at ACT and Dr. Maria Bozoudi, adjunct professor at ACT.

Sixty participants from seven academic institutions (ACT, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Democritus University of Thrace, University of Macedonia, University of the Aegean, Hellenic Open University, Alexander Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki) and five high schools (Anatolia College, 11 th Senior High School of Thessaloniki, Apostolos Pavlos High School, Intercultural Senior High school of Evosmos, and the Arts High School of Ampelokipoi) attended the event. Young professionals who work for local and international NGOs in the region also participated in the Convention.

At first, the participants attended two presentations: One by Dr. Haris Kountouros (Public Relations Officer at the European Parliament – Office in Greece) about the European Parliament elections this year and the associated ‘this time I’m voting’ campaign and the second by Dr. Sotiris Serbos (Assistant Professor at the Democritus University of Thrace) on the general political context of the 2019 European Parliament Electionsand the key issues in the EU agenda. Then, the members of the Convention were divided in thematic working groups according to their preferences and, based on relevant literature they had received ahead of the event, they deliberated on the opportunities and challenges associated with this year’s European Parliament Elections. The event closed with the students presenting their positions and proposals on how to counteract the challenges and enhance the opportunities they identified during the Convention’s proceedings. The students impressed us with their excellent argumentation and presentation skills as well as with their innovative ideas and depth of their analytical thought.
