Two visiting American diplomats spoke with ACT and study abroad students this past Thursday afternoon in an interactive session dedicated to the current state of US-Greek relations. Michele Siders, Political Counselor at the US Embassy in Athens, and Ross Johnston, Greece Desk Officer at the US Department of State in Washington, DC, outlined the key issues animating diplomatic relations between the United States and the Hellenic Republic. Having recently participated in the annual US-Greece Strategic Dialogue, and accompanied US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in meetings with senior figures in the Greek government of current Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Siders and Johnston related why American diplomats continue to dub Greece a “pillar of stability” in regional affairs. Siders and Johnston were accompanied by US Consul General Gregory Pfleger, Jr. who has been a steady supporter of ACT and Anatolia College during his tenure in Thessaloniki.

The session concluded with a question-answer discussion on such issues as the timing of Secretary Pompeo’s recent visit to Greece, the state of Greek-Turkish relations and the status of the Prespes Agreement between Greece and North Macedonia, and more generally the training and morale of diplomats working on issues of pertinence to Greece and Greeks. A large contingent of Northeastern University (NUin) pre-freshmen attended the session, along with an overflow audience of Greek, Balkan, and American students in ACT’s International Relations degree program.

Michele Siders is a Career US Foreign Service Officer. She is currently a Political Counselor at the US Embassy in Athens. She has studied at Boston and Georgetown Universities and at the National Defense University.

Ross Johnston is a Career US Foreign Service Officer. He is currently Greece Desk Officer in Washington, DC. He holds degrees from Tufts University and Columbia University.

For the third consecutive year, the Dukakis Center will co-host a session at Reworks Agora, the annual forum of the Reworks Music Festival. The event will take place on September 15 at Ypsilon, at 1 p.m., and will feature Epaminondas Christofilopoulos, UNESCO Chairholder in Futures Research, who will lecture, in Greek, on “Transforming the future of work”. Thessaloniki-based journalist and content strategist Alkistis Georgiou will moderate the session. The Dukakis Center has previously co-hosted Agora sessions on vTaiwan and the Sunflower Movement, and on blockchain and participatory democracy worldwide.

Epaminondas Christofilopoulos is a member of the World Future Society (WFS), Vice-Chair of the Foresight Europe Network (FEN) and Co-Chair of the Greek Node of the Millennium Project, a Washington, DC-based Think Tank coordinating futures research and foresight studies. As he notes, “the world is changing rapidly, while the levels of complexity are also increasing. In this environment, human civilization is in a constant struggle between the efforts to improve living conditions and the increasing magnitude of the complex problems it has to face. Focusing on the future of work, the Millennium Project conducted global research that focused on technological developments and resulted in drafting three scenarios for the future of work and technology in 2050”. In Agora 2019 he will look at these scenarios, examine the role of artificial intelligence, and discuss sustainable strategies for humanity.

Having a background in Physics, Environmental Studies, International Relations, and Foresight, Epaminondas has initially worked in the field of technology transfer and research commercialization, before setting up a new activity related to international research co-operation. Since then, Epaminondas has coordinated several projects in Eastern Europe, the Gulf peninsula, Latin America, Asia, and especially China, where he spent significant time during the last 10 years. Since 2010, Epaminondas draws a particular focus on future studies and foresight. His current interests include the use of gamification methods in foresight, the future of work, the concept of futures literacy, and delivering futures thinking workshops.

Reworks Agora is a cross-thematic forum that features keynote speakers, discussions, musical performances, and screenings by leading experts and pioneers in the creative economy, culture, technology, and contemporary thinking.

This year Reworks Agora marks the start of the 15th-anniversary festivities of the Reworks Festival and is open to everyone. At the end of the day, the forum will close with a big open-air party and a delightful line-up, paving the way for an enjoyable four-day festival.

Dukakis Center director David Wisner traveled to Madrid, Spain, on April 10-13, to participate in the Seventh Annual European Think Tanks Summit following an invitation of the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program, University of Pennsylvania (TTCSP), and the Real Instituto Elcano,
Dr. Wisner’s invitation came on the heels of his having invited Dr. James McGann, Director of the TTCSP, to be the keynote speaker at the Dukakis Center event in Athens on May 13.
The Madrid summit was attended by 65 senior think tank executives, from 50 think tanks in 42 countries, among which Chatham House, the Institut Montaigne, Bruegel, Clingendael, and dozens more. The Dukakis Center was the only institution based in Greece in attendance.
Among the distinguished speakers to participate were Joaquin Almunia, Javier Solana, and current Minister of Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, who hosted a dinner for conferees at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Dr. Wisner will attend the 2020 European Think Tank Summit in Amsterdam. In the interim, he will pursue the select strategic partnerships he discussed in Madrid with representatives of such institutions as Real Elcano, the Institut Montaigne, the European University Institute, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, and the Centre for Liberal Strategies (Sofia).

Such an endeavor is one of the cornerstones of current Dukakis Center strategic planning. As Dr. Wisner notes, “we have continued to attain international recognition, as a result of my having attended events in Paris, Brussels, and Madrid over the past two years, just as we have consolidated our standing among select American institutions, including, most recently, the TTCSP.”

A group of 10 students from Salem State University in Massachusetts visited Thessaloniki in late May with their Professor, Elizabeth Duclos-Orsello, to observe local and European elections and learn first hand about politics and electioneering in Greece. The Dukakis Center, in the persons of Director David Wisner and ACT alumnus Harry Lalatsis, were on hand to welcome them and to host a discussion session on the current Greek political scene.

Mr. Lalatsis (ACT Class of 2004, ACT MBA 2008), delivered a showcase presentation based on data on political opinions his marketing company has gathered over the years in collaboration with Dukakis Center friend and collaborator Giorgos Siakas, University of Macedonia. The subsequent discussion focused on the climate in which parliamentary elections will be held on July 7, and the principal differences between Greek and European politicking on the one hand, and political behavior in the USA on the other.

Professor Duclos-Orsello had spent the 2015-16 academic year in Greece as a Fulbright scholar and featured at the Dukakis Center's April 2016 conference on "Civic Engagement and the Practices" at the Met Hotel. She coordinates regular study trips to Greece with students from Salem State.

Τα τελευταία χρόνια όλο και περισσότεροι άνθρωποι προσπαθούν να πάρουν την τύχη στα χέρια τους δοκιμάζοντας να δημιουργήσουν τη δική τους επιχείρηση. Οι στατιστικές όμως δεν είναι πάντα ενθαρρυντικές: Οι μισές από τις επιχειρήσεις που θα δημιουργηθούν σήμερα δεν θα υπάρχουν μετά από 5 χρόνια.

Εύλογα δημιουργούνται κάποια ερωτήματα: Αξίζει η προσπάθεια το ρίσκο; Πώς μπορούμε να μεγιστοποιήσουμε τις πιθανότητες επιτυχίας; Ποιος ο ρόλος της καινοτομίας στην επιχειρηματικότητα και πώς μπορώ να επωφεληθώ; Πώς μπορώ να μετατρέψω την κρίση του κοροναϊού σε ευκαιρία; Πού είναι οι πελάτες μου και πώς θα του προσελκύσω; Τελικά χρήματα υπάρχουν;

Οι συμμετέχοντες του προγράμματος θα συζητήσουν αυτά τα θέματα, αλλά και άλλα πολλά, ώστε να έχουν μία εικόνα για τα εφόδια που θα χρειαστούν ώστε να μπουν στον πολλά υποσχόμενο αλλά και πολύ αβέβαιο επιχειρηματικό στίβο.

Ο Ανέστης Θ. Αναστασίου είναι υπεύθυνος των προγραμμάτων Διοίκησης Τουρισμού και Φιλοξενίας στο Αμερικάνικο Κολλέγιο Θεσσαλονίκης, στο οποίο και διδάσκει σε προπτυχιακό και μεταπτυχιακό επίπεδο. Η Εβίτα Γκαντίνα γεννήθηκε στη Θεσσαλονίκη και έχει πάνω από είκοσι πέντε χρόνια εμπειρίας σε ανώτερες θέσεις σε ελληνικές και διεθνείς εταιρείες. Είναι κάτοχος μεταπτυχιακού τίτλου στην Επιχειρησιακή Επικοινωνία και Δημόσιες Σχέσεις και Bachelor of Business Administration από το University of Houston.
Για αρκετά χρόνια ήταν μέλος των Διοικητικών Συμβουλίων ή διοικητικό στέλεχος εταιρειών κυρίως στον τομέα της κλωστοϋφαντουργίας. Από το 2001 διδάσκει σε κολέγια ενώ από το 2011 είναι εταίρος στην "For Communication", εταιρεία μάρκετινγκ και δημοσίων σχέσεων ενώ συνεχίζει να διδάσκει. Μύρων Κάντερ-Μπαξ

Ο κ. Μύρων Κάντερ-Μπαξ είναι Δικηγόρος και μέλος του Δικηγορικού Συλλόγου Θεσσαλονίκης. Είναι Υποψήφιος Διδάκτωρ του Τομέα Εμπορικού & Οικονομικού Δικαίου της Νομικής Σχολής του Αριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης και Υπότροφος του Κοινωφελούς Ιδρύματος Αλέξανδρος Σ. Ωνάσης. Γιώργος Κόκκας

Ο Γιώργος Κόκκας από τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2017 είναι ο Διευθυντής του Κέντρου Επιχειρηματικότητας του American College of Thessaloniki. Έχει περισσότερα από 25 έτη εμπειρίας σε θέματα ανάπτυξης επιχειρήσεων, τεχνολογίας-καινοτομίας, start-ups, χρηματοδότησης επενδυτικών σχεδίων, περιφερειακής ανάπτυξης. Επίσης έχει απασχοληθεί σε διευθυντικές θέσεις σε επιχειρήσεις και αναπτυξιακούς οργανισμούς, και έχει εργαστεί ως ειδικός εμπειρογνώμων σε θέματα ανταγωνιστικότητας μικρομεσαίων επιχειρήσεων και start-ups σε διεθνή έργα στα Βαλκάνια και την Τουρκία. Θεόδωρος Παπανέστορος

Ξεκίνησε τη καριέρα του από το τμήμα Marketing της Neoset και στη συνέχεια εργάστηκε επί σειρά ετών ως διευθυντικό στέλεχος στο χώρο της διαφήμισης επικοινωνίας σε 3 agencies της Αθήνας, και συγκεκριμένα στις TBWA\ATHENS, UpSet!, και MullenLowe/Athens, διαχειριζόμενος μεγάλους λογαριασμούς όπως SEAT, Citroën, Jeep, Chrysler, TOYOTOMI, ΔΕΠΑ, Ράδιο Κορασίδη, Dodge, κ.α.

Ο Δρ Νικόλας Χουρβουλιάδης είναι κάτοχος διδακτορικού διπλώματος στη Χρηματοοικονομική από το ΑΠΘ, και μεταπτυχιακός απόφοιτος του Πανεπιστημίου YALE, ΗΠΑ. Είναι Διευθυντής του Business School στο Αμερικανικό Κολλέγιο Θεσσαλονίκης, με διδασκαλία σε μαθήματα χρηματοοικονομικής, στατιστικής και οικονομικών. Το ερευνητικό του έργο έχει δημοσιευτεί σε διεθνή περιοδικά και συνέδρια, και καλύπτει την ανάλυση των επενδυτικών χαρακτηριστικών των κεφαλαιακών και τραπεζικών αγορών. Program Overview

The Advanced Business English program instructs participants in all aspects of professional communication including writing, reading, speaking and listening. It offers opportunities for vocabulary enrichment and structural improvement specific to participants’ professional communication.

Learning Objectives

The Advanced Business English program focuses on:

• Writing: Participants will learn the format of various key business documents including emails, reports, proposals, etc. Through the focus on written communication, participants will improve and develop their ability to use clear, concise and grammatically correct language.

Instructor's Bio

Julie Carter has been living and working in Greece for over 25 years and has extensive experience in all aspects of English Language Teaching. She is an active examiner in both speaking and writing for major ELT exams and has acted as team leader for speaking examiners. She ran a company for some years which focused on training teachers to deliver and create more effective lessons. For many years, Julie wrote and conducted presentations for a leading publisher throughout Greece but has recently turned her attention to teaching business English and English for specific purposes. She holds a B.A. in Modern Languages and an M.A. in TESOL and applied linguistics.

Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, the Anatolia College Libraries have remained active and open online for the institution’s faculty and students who could access remotely the libraries’ collections. To support our faculty and teachers across the institution the Anatolia College Libraries built and made available curated content on online teaching and learning, a comprehensive guide that was popular and well used according to the website statistics during this period. Also, in order to help families entertain themselves a “stay@home” guide was put together with plenty of ideas for reading, online activities, and cultural happenings. 

This activity recorded a 270% increase in visits to the Libraries website during the period of March and April 2020.

Within a two month span

• The Elementary School Library website visits increased by an astounding 551%;
• Eleftheriades Library website visits increased by 258%;
• Bissell Library had a 33% increase in website views.

Furthermore, during April and May 2020:

• The Teaching and Learning guide created for teachers and faculty was much appreciated as we had 1,367 visits
• The “stay@home” guide was clearly very popular as people visited 6,120 times
• Ebook reading at the Elementary Library resulted in 2,164 downloads of books
• We created 12 new guides during this time which had collectively 10,737 visits!
• We offered 10 recorded fairy tales prepared by the library staff, accompanied by music which had 619 visits

Looking forward, our aim is to further expand our online provision and to inform our community that we are here to support teaching and learning online. We have experienced one of our busiest periods ever and we invite and encourage everyone to continue using our libraries online while we commit ourselves to continue our long tradition of offering excellent resources and services to our community.

ACT Housing

ACT Housing provides first-year ACT students with the opportunity to live in a supportive environment, sharing their university experience. 

A key component to the ACT housing is the ACT Residence Assistants (RA) who live in each of our dorms and work to create an interactive and engaging environment for the students. They welcome the new students to their new home and provide support and orientation during the first days, as students adjust to their new surroundings. Throughout the year, the RA is an excellent resource for students and offers helpful information about ACT and Thessaloniki. The RAs regularly organize community-building activities, local outings and are available 24-hours a day to help guide students through challenging and emergency situations.

Students who live in our housing agree to live by the ACT Community Standards of respect and good stewardship.

Off-Campus Housing

ACT offers double studio apartments in contemporary apartment buildings in downtown Thessaloniki. The studio apartments are furnished and offer free WiFi, Ethernet ports and complimentary shared laundry facilities. Students provide their own linens and kitchenware. Students make their way to campus by car, taxi, bike / scooter, or the public bus #58. Students who choose to live in our off-campus housing enjoy regular interaction with other students and the easy access to downtown Thessaloniki.

Housing includes a furnished double studio with a kitchen and en-suite bathroom, heating, water, electric, WiFi and shared clothes washing machines.

Local Housing Providers

Students who wish to find their own housing can contact the ACT Student Services Office for a list of local providers. ACT does not endorse the services of any outside provider, but we have found that students have had good experiences working with the agents and individuals on this list.  Students often choose to find their own housing when they anticipate renting in the same location for the duration of their studies.  Rent in Thessaloniki typically starts from about 300€ per month, plus utilities.  Students choose the location based on personal preference to be close to the city or close to the campus. ACT Student Housing & Transportation Facebook Group

This group has been created by the ACT Student Government Association (SGA) for all ACT students to share information about housing and transportation.  Students can post in this group and respond to posts to:

• Find a house for rent
• Transfer the house that you no longer need to someone who does
• Find roommates
• Find a co-passenger
• Find someone who is willing to share their transportation with you

The group is only available to ACT students. A link to the group is sent to newly admitted students, who can request to become members and join the conversation!

The Dukakis Center hosted a Zoom webinar on May 27, 2020, with representatives of the Millennium Project, Transparency International Greece, ACT, and the Navarino Network, on the future of event management in the aftermath of the national lockdown.

Epaminondas Christofilopoulos, Anna Damaskou, Anestis Anastasiou, and Angelos Kaskanis were the featured panelists, while Dimitris Diamantis, director of ACT’s office of alumni relations and career services, moderated the proceedings. Dukakis Center director David Wisner made a brief cameo appearance. The discussion revolved around event cancellations, online variations of previously scheduled events, and expectations for the second half of 2020 and beyond. Key points raised, included the following:

• How to measure the impact of virtual events on participants and auditors;
• How long to expect webinars and hybrid events to be the norm in the wait for a vaccine for the coronavirus;
• How to design innovative workshops and games to increase engagement, especially in smaller events or break-out sessions;
• How to understand the impact of the coronavirus and the lockdown on the larger event management ecosystem, including hotels, airline companies, and travel agencies, and so on.

All parties agreed that while Greece will return to a semblance of normalcy in the summer of 2020, the impact of the crisis will continue to be felt for two years or more until a publicly accessible vaccine can be developed.

Several speakers raised the specter of an overly busy events calendar as organizations like those represented in the webinar scramble to reschedule and adapt to the realities of the post-lockdown environment.

In his conclusion, Dr. Wisner noted that events scheduled at the Dukakis Center in the shadow of COVID-19 should seek to do justice to the memory of victims of the coronavirus, in keeping with the Center’s humanitarian service mandate.

This was the second of two webinars on event management in the era of COVID-19 organized and hosted by the Dukakis Center. The first, on May 20, featured organizers of leading festivals and cultural activities.
