About the course

Anthropology 215: Methods and Practices of Archaeological Excavation

This thematic course explores methodological approaches to the investigation and interpretation of past societies with an emphasis on excavation practices. It examines the major frameworks including older and current trends as well as the regional archaeological context in Northern Greece. The in-classroom teaching is complemented by a practicum that also provides students with a hands-on, excavation and laboratory experience in the study of ancient artefacts and points at the different ways in which such experience can answer major archaeological questions. In short, it aids the reconstruction and understanding of past social, economic, political and ideological realities. Working both in class and at the actual field, students will examine important archaeological evidence from the site of Toumba in the Northern Greek city of Thessaloniki dated from the Bronze Age to Hellenistic times. It is supplemented by site visits in various locations around Thessaloniki and Athens (5 credits).

Completing this program, students will learn to:

  • understand major excavation techniques
  • familiarize themselves with an important landmark in Northern Greece and with archaeology as practiced in this part of the world
  • use lab technology in practice
  • think critically about reconstructions of the past

Assessment will be based on class and fieldwork participation as well as on short assignments in class and in excavation practicum.
